As with any living plant, trees absorb ground water through their root systems. This water is still present in the wood once it is sawn into lumber. Kiln drying is a carefully controlled heated process that removes this natural water from the lumber down to a moisture content of between 6-8% making it suitable for indoor woodworking applications. Kiln dried lumber has many advantages over “green” or air dried lumber. Not only is it lighter, stronger and brighter in color, It glues, screws, nails, surfaces and takes stains and sealants far better than air died material. I often get calls from customers who have a stack of "green" lumber out in the barn that they would like to have kiln dried for indoor use. We welcome these orders, please call ahead for pricing, kiln schedule, and space availability.
